Hexagon Mosaic
Made to celebrate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee commemorating her 50th anniversary on the throne, this Hexagon Mosaic quilt reflects the widespread celebrations across the British empire in 1887.
Here we see fussy-cut hexagons arranged into floral shapes and a central star, with textile portraits of Victoria at its center. The star motif reflects popular quilt traditions in the 19th century, while the inclusion of a royal portrait demonstrates the enthusiasm and desire for commemoration through quiltmaking.
This quilt is currently on display in the IQM's Coryell Gallery as part of the exhibition
