Khayamiya (Appliquéd Tent Panel)
For our Quilt of the Month, we are sharing a special piece from our international collection.
This elaborately hand-pieced and appliquéd tent panel measures approximately 9 feet in height and 5 feet in width. Known as khayamiya, panels such as these have been produced for centuries by highly skilled Egyptian artisans for diverse purposes, ranging from large tents used in royal celebrations to, in more recent times, smaller wall hangings intended for tourists. The panel's poetic Arabic inscription includes a line that can be translated as, "This noble house is a pleasure to look at."
This piece entered the IQM’s collection in 2015 and was on display in 2023 as part of “Placemaking: Quilts and the Creation of Special Spaces” alongside three other similar tent panels. Though its precise origins are unknown, it was likely made around the turn of the 20th century.
